What Deoxycholic Acid Is

Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that naturally occurs in the body and helps break down dietary fat. When injected into targeted fat pads, it disrupts fat cell membranes, leading to gradual and permanent fat reduction in that area.

Once destroyed, fat cells do not regenerate. However, remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, so overall lifestyle matters.

Our Fat Reduction Philosophy

Injectable fat reduction requires precision, patience, and appropriate expectations.

Our approach emphasizes:

  • Careful patient and area selection
  • Conservative, anatomy-aware dosing
  • Staged treatment plans rather than aggressive single sessions
  • Respect for lymphatic drainage and surrounding structures
  • Responsible cosmetic medicine over rushed results

This is not a “one-and-done” treatment—and it should not be treated like one.

Treatment Options

Compounded Deoxycholic Acid (Standard Option)

We primarily use a compounded deoxycholic acid formulation, which allows flexibility in dosing and treatment planning while maintaining safety and effectiveness when used appropriately.

This option is commonly chosen for:

  • Cost-conscious treatment planning
  • Smaller or multiple treatment areas
  • Gradual, staged fat reduction

Brand-Name Kybella® (Available by Request)

Brand-name Kybella is available upon request for patients who:

  • Prefer FDA-approved branding
  • Have prior experience with Kybella
  • Desire continuity with previous treatments

Both options use the same active molecule. We will discuss the differences, expectations, and suitability during consultation.

What Deoxycholic Acid Helps With

On-Label Use

  • Submental fat (under the chin)

Off-Label Applications (Used Selectively)

In appropriate candidates, deoxycholic acid may be used off label to treat other small, localized fat deposits.

Common off-label areas include:

  • Jawline and jowls
  • Bra fat
  • Upper arms (small pockets)
  • Abdomen (select focal areas only)
  • Inner thighs (small areas)
  • Knees

Off-label use is determined on an individual basis and requires careful assessment of anatomy, skin quality, fat distribution, and lymphatic drainage.

What to Expect

  • A focused consultation and anatomical assessment
  • Clear discussion of on-label vs off-label use
  • Treatment performed in-office
  • Swelling, firmness, and tenderness are expected and temporary
  • Gradual fat reduction over several weeks

Most patients require 2–4 treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart, depending on the area and goal.

How Deoxycholic Acid Fits Into Your Care

Injectable fat reduction works best when paired with a thoughtful plan.

Some patients choose to combine treatment with:

  • Body composition or metabolic testing
  • Weight loss or metabolic optimization programs
  • RF skin tightening to support skin quality
  • Lifestyle strategies to maintain results

These combinations are optional and discussed only when they meaningfully support outcomes

Is Deoxycholic Acid Right for You?

This treatment may be a good fit if you:

  • Have small, stubborn fat pockets
  • Are near your goal weight
  • Have reasonable skin elasticity
  • Prefer a non-surgical approach
  • Understand that results are gradual

If laxity is the primary concern, we may recommend alternative treatments instead.
